The first week has come to a close already!

The days have gone by so quickly as everyone is having tons of fun working, making new friends and engaging in all facets of the arts. The children are all channeling their inner artist and it is shown in their work and all that they have created.

Today, those who are in the “Piece of Pie” play made some of their props, which included cardboard 3-D instruments that were later painted, as well as signs and any other props they need. The other art classes tried some more mediums today, such as using water color paint to make animals on white paper. Those looked great!

In group 2’s play, they started rehearsing the songs for the play. The music portion of the plays was added in today, so those who have singing parts practiced their songs. The song about numbers that the witches sing was coming along nicely. The kids also had a lot of fun trying on costumes for their characters. For many, it was dress-up time and you could see the kids becoming their characters and entering a fantasy world while putting on the costumes. Who doesn’t love to play dress-up?

In group 1’s theater rehearsal, they continued with Papagayo, in which certain animals sing a version of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, but with some of the words changed. Today they worked on the second half of their performance.

During the midday break, everyone was once again thrilled about the water games. It was definitely a good day to play in the water today because of the heat. The kids were having fun playing in the pools and using the water slide. Others preferred to stay dry, or attempted to stay dry despite the water balloons, by playing on the playground. Even with the extra time it takes to get everyone into their bathing suits and outfitted for water games, it is still totally worth it.

In the afternoon portion, those who chose to learn the dance routines learned the proper ways to stretch and dance to get the most out of their physical movements and to be safe and careful.

The first group doing the blacklight was just so excited, they had so much energy while building with their neon cups stacked on large neon signs. It looked so dazzling in the dark under the blacklight. This continues to be the highlight for the kids.

In crafts, the kids continued with a really creative and fun idea with DIY sandals. They had colorful duct tape, which they fashioned over molds into their own sandals. Some chose flip-flop styles, and others made a different type. Other kids started to make bead necklaces.

For some kids, today marked their last day at Multi-Arts, so they finished up their projects and made sure to gather all their pieces of artwork and everything they made.

The first week was definitely a great success! No major problems at all, aside from minor cuts and scrapes (kids will be kids). But what is truly great is the exposure the kids are receiving to all the arts- dance, music, theater, art, writing, and fashion. It is such a wonderful time for kids to be able to experience this and develop and further develop their creative senses. You can see it on their faces and in everything they do that they are truly enjoying this wonderful program.

Can’t wait for next week!

Day 3

Creativity, laughter and enjoyment were flowing from the classrooms yet again today as the children continued to learn aspects of the arts. Everyone is gearing up for the plays. They continued rehearsing today.
In art, they are making props and other artwork to be used for their characters in the play. In fashion and costume design, they are designing their own costumes. As well as making cute sandals out of colored duck tape.

In other areas, the kids really liked working with all sorts of glow in the dark objects and building their own city and seeing how it looked in the blacklight.

In the writing and storytelling portions, the kids helped out more with the story of Brin Bixby.

In dance, some kids got to learn and make up their own dance moves to a song from the movie Hercules.

In total, the kids are continuing to work on their projects they’ve started and in the meantime are letting their creative juices flow- making art, writing stories, drawing, coloring, acting and of course, playing outside. It was another great day!

The kids got right back into their creative pursuits right where they left off. In the art classes, kids continued to work on their cardboard 3-D animals and began to attach the legs and decorate their animals. When asked, one girl said that she had made a tiger and proceeded to play with it while a tinfoil person was riding on top. It was great to see that the kids were all interacting well with each other. They were all happily chatting with one another while working on their projects. The two older groups continued with their plays. Group 2 is doing a play titled "Castle in the Clouds" while Group 3 is performing "A Piece of Pie" by Pancho Gutstein. The kids really got into it today, so much that one kid yelled, "theater, theater, its time for theater!" They worked on staging the play and learning their lines and evoking emotion. Many of the kids were natural actors and they had a great time with that. The little kids imagined they were animals for the book Papagayo that they're going to be performing and acted out the storybook. Some animals included bunnies, coyotes and raccoons.

At recess everyone was so excited for water games since it was Tuesday. Everyone had so much fun playing outside with the water and getting sprayed by the hose, playing in the mini pools, throwing water balloons and using the water slides. It was a blast and a perfect refresher in the middle of the hot day.
In the afternoon the creativity continued. During storytime, as the younger kids settled into their places on the ground with blankets and pillows, they were just starting to get tired from the water games-some even still had wet hair- as they listened to the story of Brin Bixby.
In fashion, using the tinfoil figures the kids made in art class, they began cutting out clothing from fabric and designing their figures.
In blacklight, the kids were once again thrilled to be able to see how certain items glow in the dark. They performed the wave and everyone cooperated together.
During the writing portion, the kids were all busily creating their own projects while discussing among themselves. The main topic of todays discussion was Disney movies, especially Frozen, and the kids (and counselors) went on and on about their favorite Disney films and songs.
Overall, it was a really good day and the kids are working nicely with everyone and are having a great time learning about the arts and getting to make their own art and fun.
